More On: Dune: Awakening

Riding the wave of Dune: Part Two hitting movie theaters this past weekend, Funcom held its first Dune: Awakening Direct today, and they really spoiled us. We received our first gameplay trailer, and lots of details on the game’s systems, and the video game representation of Arrakis. You can see the gameplay below, or watch the entire presentation here.

If you’re totally out of the loop, Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMORPG set on the desert world of Arrakis. Players will step into the world with nothing, trying to survive in the sandbox while making a name for themselves. To survive, you must gather resources to craft everything, including weapons, gear, clothing, your base, and vehicles. You will be able to join factions to help fight for resources, with the game including a system that lets factions vote on events that impact the entire world.

Base building can be done cooperatively using hologram blueprints, or you can sell them to other players directly in-game. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Dune game without Sandworms, and each week certain parts of Arrakis will be affected by Coriolis Storms, completely shifting the landscape – and destroying player outposts. Additionally, there will be certain parts of the map that have PvP enabled if that is your thing.

Dune: Awakening is currently undergoing closed beta tests, which hopefully means that a release is not too far off. It will release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S when it’s ready to go. I just saw the second film over the weekend, so I am on a big Dune kick at the moment, going as far as ordering the first three books. Which is to say that I can’t wait to get my hands on this game.
