More On: Dune: Awakening

Developer Funcom revealed the first look at pre-alpha gameplay footage for survival MMORPG Dune: Awakening in a new teaser that debuted at last night’s Game Awards. It is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with no release window given at this point.

First revealed at Gamescom earlier this year, Dune: Awakening is based on the sci-fi novels of the same name from Frank Herbert, as well as the 2021 film from Denis Villeneuve. Funcom is no stranger to survival MMOs, having most recently developed Conan Exiles for both PC and consoles.

In Dune: Awakening, players try to survive the myriad dangers of Arrakis alongside thousands of other players as you embark on your own personal journey through the world. Searching for water, building shelters, and taking part in battles over spice are all things you can expect to do. Funcom says that battles can range from quick skirmishes to large-scale battles featuring infantry, ground vehicles, and ornithopters, with each player playing an essential role.

As far as the more role-playing aspects, expect to go on scouting operations, establish a spice harvesting operation, and work to gain influence over the powerful houses of the world.

I’ve never been an MMO player, per se, but after seeing the new film last year I am very intrigued by this. It’s a world I might actually be able to get invested in within an MMO. Check out the new teaser trailer below:
