After taking the gaming world by storm in the summer of 2021 with the launch of its free-to-play Halo-like first-person shooter Splitgate, developer 1047 Games announced that content and feature development on the game will be coming to an end. The move comes as result of the studio transitioning to its next project – another shooter set in the Splitgate universe built in Unreal Engine 5.

Splitgate will remain online and playable, officially moving out of beta on September 15th. Coming alongside the official 1.0 version is a free Battle Pass with a so-called infinite number of tiers featuring new characters, skins, and more.

1047 Games says that what started as a college project amongst friends has grown to a point that a major change was needed to fulfill their vision for Splitgate:

“After careful consideration and much deliberation the 1047 team has determined that in order to build the game that fans deserve – and to build it in a way that isn’t trying to retrofit our existing game – we are turning our attention away from iterative, smaller updates and going all-in to focus on a new game in the Splitgate universe which will present revolutionary, not just evolutionary, changes to the gameplay,” said Ian Proulx, creator of Splitgate and CEO of 1047 Games. “Splitgate will remain online and supported for our dedicated community who have been the backbone of our studio from our earliest playtests on PC. Our community means everything to us and we can’t wait to share what’s next with them.”

The popular shooter originally launched on PC in 2019, but hit its stride after releasing in beta on Xbox and PlayStation in July of 2021, amassing more than 18 million total downloads along the way. In fact, the game’s popularity led to 1047 Games receiving $10 million in funding from a venture capital firm, which they announced in July of 2021 would be used to expand the team and increase server capacity.

Zephyr Cove, NV. (Sept. 2, 2022) – 1047 Games announced today that Splitgate’s coming update will be its last major iteration as the development team is turning its attention to its next project, a shooter set in the Splitgate universe. Splitgate will officially move out of beta on Sept. 15 when it launches its next season, which adds a new, free Battle Pass featuring an infinite number of levels with new characters, skins, and more.

Splitgate originally launched on PC in 2019, with Xbox and PlayStation beta versions following in 2021. With more than 18 million downloads, Splitgate is one of the most successful online games in recent years. Its arena shooter mechanics combined with playful physics-based game design created an entirely new and engaging genre of shooter that resonated with fans around the world.

1047 Games has recruited some of the industry’s top talent and continues to do so as the studio now turns its attention to a fresh, new Splitgate project that is being built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5.

Weekly featured playlists in Splitgate are set to continue. Fans can also anticipate continued item drops. Though feature development has ended, Splitgate and its community remain supported, giving fans the same great experience they have come to love.
