More On: What we're playing

So, what are you playing?

I've been playing the Outriders demo over the last few days. I won't say too much as my impressions should be up soon (or might be out now depending on when you're reading this) so check that out for my detailed thoughts on all the content in the demo.

hen I was getting kicked off the Outriders servers, I resorted back to FIFA 21. I haven't played in quite a while so it was pretty much me getting beat with my sub-par squad. So I decided to check out the Volta mode and surprisingly had a lot of fun in it. It's one of the overlooked FIFA game modes but it's worth checking out.

After several years thinking it was never going to happen, and one year of great anticipation, I finally have my hands on Bravely Default II. And now I remember just how much this game unlocks my latent OCD (not saying that flippantly, I'm diagnosed). When I get a new job in Bravely Default, which takes place regularly throughout the game, I don't pursue the story until I have maxed the job out with at least one character, possibly two. At the beginning of the game, I kept my entire party as Freelancers—the default job—until they were maxed out, as I wanted to unlock the perk that allows them to level jobs faster. When I get a new job, I just go out into the field and grind and grind and grind. I'm so far ahead of where I should be level-wise that I was able to beat the first three boss battles in the game only using standard attacks. I even had my White Mage slashing away with her Mithral dagger, only using her to heal twice in the last battle. It's a problem. I know that I am playing the game wrong, and not getting to see half of the powers my characters possess. But in my pursuit of ultimate power, I just set them all up to attack four times and go, go, go. You play your way, I'll play mine.

Without throwing up the devil horns or growing its hair out too long, there's something metal as heck about Loop Hero. I mean, the game is only 500MB—half a gigabyte. It's nothing. Yet Four Quarters built an entire raggedly beautiful roguelike into a file size smaller than a handful of pics on my phone. Sure, it looks like somebody took a hit of acid and then blew into a Nintendo cartridge, but you say that like it's a bad thing. Also, I was pleasantly surprised when I visited Loop Hero's website, started scrolling down, and realized I was playing an encounter in the game? Then it popped me back up to the top of the page, so I started scrolling down again and it played out a different encounter, further down the path. I mean, I've never seen a website do that before, have you?

My old roommate convinced me to redownload PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Even though there are vastly superior battle royale titles out there, PUBG is still not only playable—but also enjoyable. It doesn't have the smoothest gameplay, and it still has a bunch of bugs (sometimes your character drops into the fray while you're still staring at a loading screen), but I get plenty of thrills roaming its expansive terrains. At the very least, it's a nice change of pace from Warzone; it's not unusual to go an entire game without seeing another survivor until the final circles. That could sound boring, but it adds to the tension buildup.

Much like Eric, I'm going to be absorbed by Bravely Default II the instant I buy it, and I don't think I'm going to be able to wait much longer. I've only held off so far because I know my work would be hugely impacted by my desire to dive into the game so odds are that happens this weekend.

When I'm not playing that though, I'll be continuing to run through the early access of Revita. I'm more accustomed to my roguelike games being of the card variety, but I'm enjoying this two stick shooter approach thoroughly.

Lastly it's my wife's birthday this weekend, so some Jackbox Party Pack 7 will be making an appearance as we play with some friends. I would say I'm not looking forward to this as much, but with all the quarantining going on, I'm very much looking forward to the social game.

For some unknown reason, I can't quit playing quick rounds of #killallzombies. I don't know. I've tried. I seem to just load it up without even thinking and playing for 20 minutes or so. It's weird and I need to stop. But I won't.

My weekend will be taken up mostly by my now nearly complete and functional bar top arcade from Microcenter. It's alive with LED buttons and a Raspberry Pi 3 for testing purposes. I'm looking to get a smaller motherboard for my Intel CPU to fit into the tight space as right now my smallest motherboard on hand is a mATX and I need to find a good ITX one to go in there. Once that's done, I'll have a pretty powerful arcade emulating machine and one that will be able to play a good amount of systems.
