Control Ultimate Edition, the next-gen console update, is finally here

More On: Control

After an initial delay the release of Control Ultimate Edition is upon us. If you remember the controversy, the Ultimate Edition is a re-release of the original game and all DLC on the last-gen systems that came bundled with the next-gen update. Players who only owned the original version, however, are not eligible for the next-gen update; only those who were late the party and didn't start playing it until around the September release of the Ultimate Edition and bought straight in or fans dedicated enough to plunk down an extra $40 for a game they already owned to get the update. There is no $10 upgrade or anything similar that I am aware of.

The silver lining for PS Plus subscribers is that Control Ultimate Edition is one of this month's free games with the subscription, so that's cool. Xbox Series X/S gamers though, not so much luck. Xbox Players do get the option of playing in performance mode, where frame rates get locked at 60fps, but where as PS5 players 1440p render and 4k output resolution Xbox gets downgraded to 900p render/1080p output. Both systems get the graphics mode which runs at 30fps but then adds ray tracing to the 1440p render/4k output. PlayStation users get the haptic feedback on the DualSense controller also...

So, let's face it, given the choice, fire this game up on the PS5. It's free with your PS Plus subscription this month and you can keep playing as long as your PS Plus is active and it's going to look better. But either way this is a game with excellent, excellent gameplay elements that is highly regarded and won oodles of awards. I might have been a little down on some plot and dialogue and cutscene execution in my review, but can't fault the gameplay and the brutalist setting itself is enthralling.
