When Night Dive Studios resurrected System Shock Enhanced Edition and System Shock 2 for modern operating systems, I knew the groundbreaking cyberpunk franchise was in good hands. Now the team has shown off two minutes of pre-alpha footage for System Shock Remastered, the ground-up remake of the 1994 original that they announced last year.
For an old Shock fan like me this footage is nothing short of miraculous. While a pioneering effort in 1994, System Shock is still a harsh mistress today, even with the Enhanced Edition's optimized controls and graphics. Remastered, however, is faithfully recreating the game with the Unity engine and all under the watchful eye of original developers like System Shock artist Robb Waters.
With Night Dive's creative partner studio Otherside Entertainment working on System Shock 3 (with the help of Warren Spector, no less!), the classic series is seeing a real renaissance. System Shock Remastered should arrive sometime in 2017.
