Nearly a year ago now, I had the pleasure of reviewing Warhorse Studio’s long-awaited sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. I believe it was one of 2025’s best games, and certainly one of its best role-playing games. It’s that last part that has brought me back to the game all these months later, sucking me in once more to medieval life.
KCD2’s Legacy of the Forge expansion, which originally released back in September, transforms the game into a medieval life sim, fully embracing the concept of roleplaying. Leaning into protagonist Henry’s lineage as the son of a blacksmith, Legacy of the Forge invites you to clean up an old, dumpy forge just outside the walls of the vast city of Kuttenburg.
Shkoda, the master blacksmith who once operated the forge has since passed away, leaving the forge and its amenities in a state of disrepair. It’s an opportunity that I, playing as Henry, could not pass up, given how great the blacksmith minigame is in KCD2.
What I did not realize is that taking over Shkoda’s forge also meant I gained my own customizable house and garden. The derelict forge is not much to look at early on, with a roof that has caved in, and clutter filling every nook and cranny, but as each day passes, the forge becomes your own with each upgrade you make.
After endearing myself to the Kuttenburg Blacksmith’s Guild by passing their entrance exam and completing odd jobs for my fellow guild members, I was sworn in as a master blacksmith. I then quickly found myself completely immersed in the life of a medieval blacksmith, with my days going something like this:
7:00AM – Wake up. My neighbors are just getting started for the day too. The guy who has been cutting on the same log for weeks next door gets back to work on that same piece of timber. My dog, Mutt, greets me and I toss him some dried beef for breakfast.
8:00AM – Check the game map to see where the daily blacksmith quests are. Sometimes a guild member needs me to go deal with bandits that have stolen goods from our blacksmith homies. I have a very specific set of skills for dealing with such issues. More on that later.
10:00AM – Grab a couple ladles of whatever Magdalena (Shkoda’s widow who hung around to help me) has cooked up for breakfast. It’s not much, but it sates the grumbling in my belly, and boosts my hunger rating to 100, which will easily get me through the day.
11:00AM – A customer is waiting at my doorstep. Sometimes they need a tool for work, sometimes it’s a gift for someone special, or sometimes it’s a nice sharp, pointy thing called a sword to fight with. I’m still amazed that each person that comes to see me has their own daily routine – just like me.
Noon – Head into town to purchase the supplies I need to craft my new commission. Haggle over the price to knock 15 to 20 groschen off the price. Somehow this increases my reputation with that vendor.
1:00PM – Fire up the forge after a busy morning. I closely watch the metal I’m working with. I know it is ready for the anvil when it turns a straw yellow color. Fiery red is too cold, and white hot is, well, too hot.
2:00PM – After dozens of strikes with my blacksmith hammer, several flips, and a few reheats in the forge, I’m finally ready to quelch and finish my commission for the day. But no blacksmith is worth his weight in saltpeter unless he sharpens his product to a razor’s edge, so I hit the grinding wheel.
3:00PM – At last, my commission is complete. I’ve gotten skilled enough that I’m always producing tier 3 items and sometimes reaching the coveted tier 4. They don’t call me “Master Blacksmith” for nothing.
4:00PM – It’s time to deliver the goods. I visit the map once more to locate my customer. I meet them where they are, be they at home, work, the market, or in bed for a nap. Listen, I’ve got this customer service thing figured out centuries before Amazon is even a twinkle in Jeff Bezos’s eye.
5:00PM – Found them. They were chopping wood with an old crappy axe outside their home. Not anymore. I present to you, Mr. Czech Farmer Man, your lovely tier 3 craftsman’s axe. What’s that? You love it? Of course you do. I’m a master blacksmith. Now pay up. Daddy needs a new roof for the forge.
6:00PM – I’ve had a full day, but while other folks are beginning to wind down, I’m just getting started. As the sun begins to set, I slip into my all-black outfit…
7:00PM – Remember those thieving bandits that my blacksmith brethren asked me to deal with this morning? They’re about to get dealt with. I hop on my horse and head to the area of the map where they were last seen.
10:00PM – Damn, these guys were hard to find. But the light of their campfire (and their sentry’s torch) gives them away. I tell Mutt to stay put and I skulk into the darkness of night, surveying the situation, and waiting for all but one to go to sleep.
Midnight – All but the sentry is fast asleep now. I sneak up behind him and stab him with my dagger. I pilfer his body, but he does not have the keys to the nearby chest where they’re hiding the stolen goods I’m looking for. I’m afraid my body count is going to rise.
1:00AM – An hour later, I’ve transitioned three more bandits from nightly slumber to permanent dirt nap. Keys in hand, I unlock the chest and acquire what I need to complete my task and even make off with some expensive loot for my trouble.
4:00AM – Returning to Kuttenburg, the city sleeps, minus the guards. I’m covered in blood, but I beeline it to my forge and hit the washing tub to get the blood off. Magdalena doesn’t need to see this side of me, the sweet old lady that she is.
5:00AM – I hit the sack after nearly 24 hours on the clock. I’m dog-dead tired, starving, and the sun is starting to peek over the horizon. I think I’ll sleep in tomorrow. I’ve earned it.
