Enough lawful good talk: D&D's Scion of the Three Rogue is for players more interested in tyranny, violence, murder, and death

"Become a Gruesome Agent of Malice"? For some Dungeons & Dragons players, that byline gets a yes please. And for Rogue players, that's easy to arrange with the Scion of the Three subclass.

Found only in the Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun – Player Expansion, there's one crucial word that's been redacted from that title: Dead. Meaning, you're a Scion of the Dead Three. And anyone that's played Baldur's Gate 3 or the tabletop Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus knows that those Dead Three refer to: Bane, a god of tyranny; Bhaal, a god of violence and murder (AND murder, it says); and Myrkul, a god of death.

Some ask for this way of life. Others may be "thrust on this path by a curse," though Heroes of Faerun leaves that gate wide open as to how that happens. Baldur's Gate is home to a Scion of the Three Rogue—but evil gets around. You could just as well be working with a secular thieves' guild like the Shadow Thieves of Amn or the Xanathar Guild in Waterdeep.

Here are the violent AND murderous abilities you'll gain when you choose this subclass at level 3:

Scion of the Three (Rogue)

Level 3: Bloodthirst. You're a shark that smells blood in the water. If you see your enemy bloodied, you're gonna BAMF over to them and immediately make one melee attack.

Level 3: Dread Allegiance. This is where you pick your poison among the Dead Three deities (Bane, for example) to gain damage resistance (Psychic, for example) and learn a cantrip spell (Minor Illusion, for example). And don't worry if you fear commitment, because you can select one of the other two gods after a Long Rest.

Level 9: Strike Fear. You gain Terrify as a Cunning Strike option. You're going to have to chase your enemy down now, but you'll be attacking with advantage as you do.

Level 13: Aura of Malevolence. You've got such a nasty energy just hanging around you that when you use Bloodthirst (above) you do a little damage to the folks you BAMF towards or BAMF away from.

Level 17: Dread Incarnate

  • Cutthroat. You can use Bloodthirst even more.
  • Murderous Intent. When you roll Sneak Attack damage, any 1 or 2 on the die become a 3. Excellent for folks using weapons that roll 4-sided dice for damage.
