Nothing In Walkabout Mini Golf Prepared Me for The Meow Wolf Course

More On: Walkabout Mini Golf

My love affair with Walkabout Mini Golf is deepening, but still in the early stages; we are definitely spending a lot of time together, and I think we have officially moved past “hanging out”. But we are still newly together, and there are a lot of things we don’t yet know about each other. So, as our relationship blossoms, we are exploring each other’s pasts.

In other words, I’m psycho obsessed with playing every existing course in Walkabout Mini Golf – a feat that long-time fans might realize is a bit daunting. There is a ton of content in the game, and I like to take things nice and slow with each course, taking in the sights and poking around for all the lost golf balls (this minigame hides a unique golf ball on each hole in every course; it is its own separate-but-adjacent obsession).

So I’ve been dipping around, playing course by course, getting to know the various hilarious and unique treats offered by each. Every course in the game offers its own unique , but flavor of fun, but nothing I had seen before could have prepared me for the Meow Wolf course.

This might be because, as an East Coast guy, I was unfamiliar with what exactly “Meow Wolf” is. It turns out that Meow Wolf is a chain of unique museum/exploration/experience/art installation facilities that started out West and is slowly making its way across the US. In Columbus, Ohio, we had a similar installation known as OtherWorld, so once I checked out the Meow Wolf website, I immediately locked in on the sort of experience the company offers. It’s basically a space where you wander around and explore, checking out all the cool stuff they have set up for you to play with and experience. The words “discovery” and “delight” seem to be the primary drivers of this sort of place.

But taking the aesthetic of something like Meow Wolf and translating it into a sprawling mini golf space was a stroke of genius. I can’t begin to explain how amazing this rambling environment is, or the various ways in which it engages the senses. Beyond an explosion of color and trippy sights, the course itself is laden with weird mechanics that, well, delight. My first time through, I approached every hole with a mix of dread and excited anticipation, having no idea how the course was going to flip the script on me. Every single time, Meow Wolf and Walkabout developers Mighty Coconut surprised me, leaving me laughing out loud at the creative audacity on display.

I don’t want to blow any surprises for anyone that hasn’t played the Meow Wolf course. I don't really have the words to describe the experience the course delivers, but I will say that it has my highest recommendation. I can’t wait to get the gang onto the course so I can listen to them freak out about how awesome it is.

Walkabout Mini Golf (and it’s amazing array of inexpensive DLC courses) is now available on most VR platforms. You can find a great article about the inception and creation of the Meow Wolf course here
