Flying in Walkabout Mini Golf is a hypnotic and awesome way to see the game's elaborate worlds

Walkabout Mini Golf is having a moment with the Gaming Nexus gang. After trying the game and getting super excited about it, I dragged John and Joseph into a multiplayer session to determine if they thought it was as awesome as I do (they did, because it is). Now the Walkabout conversation is in full swing in our group Slack, with ongoing discussions about different courses and techniques. But so far, I'm the only one that has become obsessed with the game's flying mechanics.

No flying in this video, just a lot of friendly cussing and fussing

I didn't even realize you could fly in Walkabout Mini Golf until it happened by accident. But it turns out that if you point your controller/putter at the sky and push forward on the stick, you will come unglued from the ground and start levitating. After that, just point where you want to go and push forward, and you have free reign over the game's beautifully stylized worlds. It's a great way to search for hidden golf balls and other secrets, but I've gone far beyond that, using the feature to just kinda chill out and dip around the levels for great views.

That's the game's Shangri-La level, as seen from a moderate distance. Here it is from above, giving you a great view of how meticulously designed these courses really are:

I can't express how much I love the sense of freedom this Mini Golf game's flight mechanic gives me. Whoever came up with the idea to allow players to untether themselves and just soar around the courses was a genius.

And how high can you go? Pretty high. This is the Arizona Modern course as seen from above:

But we can do better than that. In the next screen shot, those white puffy things you see below me? Those are the clouds you see from ground while putting.

There is no real reason for the developers at Mighty Coconut to include flight in this game, other than that it's awesome to experience. They even went so far as to add sound effects; if you go high enough, you start to hear the wind whistling around your head. I half expected to break through the skybox and see stars start to appear above me.

Flight in games is always enjoyable, but when you discover it in such a weird, unexpected way, it absolutely elevates the game as a whole. Just reason #789 you should check out Walkabout Mini Golf, available now on most VR platforms.
