At EVO, we got the chance to play the upcoming Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls game. The line was long, the people were excited, and you only got ten minutes. Admittingly, I had a time slot reserved, but if you've even been to EVO, you know how much of a sensory overload it is. Needless to say, I showed up a few minutes late, and I deserved to be taken through the tutorial of the game by one of the programmers. He then used the last two minutes of my time to beat the breaks off me.
When Arc System Works and Sony announced the closed beta, I thought I knew how this was going to go. I was going to be on the outside looking in, but a light shined through my window, came through my ethernet cable, and sun beamed me an email. "Do you want to be part of the closed beta?" Yes. Yes I do.
The beta started me out in the tutorial, and reminded me of the modern controls. Light, Medium, Heavy, Throws, and specials. Even the supers can be done with a combination of buttons. Your wombo combos can also be done with a series of button pushes. Light, light, light, and light gives you a combo. The cool thing about this game, is assembling your other three characters.
You pick 4 characters, and start off with two. Once you make your opponent break a wall with a strong attack, you get another ally. You can bring them in for assists, to start, continue, or even end a combo. Once you get all four members, you will see some absolute wild things happen, and it all works. The game is beautiful to look at. I don't want to get too much into this, but I really liked it.
I went on an 11 game wining streak, and then lost. It gave us a preview of how the lobbies worked. This is your Arc System Works specialty. The chibi characters. The arcades you can walk up to. You could even choose multiple regions, if the lobby you were assigned to was full. This made it more fun to try other regions, and try your luck with different parts of the world.
I really did enjoy my time with the beta. I worry that once it gets cracked, which it will, that people will be unbearable, as in any fighting game. I will say, that it will be very fun to watch, similar to how Dragon Ball FighterZ was. It could be sped up a little, but it's faster than Mortal Kombat 1, and just as beautiful. If there's another beta, I suggest you give it a shot, even if you're not the best at fighting games, but you're familiar with fighting game mechanics. And do it as soon as possible. This is one you're going to want to "git gud" at very very quickly.
