It’s Friday afternoon, which means that a week’s worth of battling it out on the rails and chutes of our favorite virtual pinball machines has come to an end! A few weeks back, Eric highlighted what we dubbed the first official GN Score Battle in Zen Studios’ Pinball FX VR.
In that initial week, the crew battled it out to achieve the highest score in Arcade Mode on Medieval Madness. Eric, walked away that week with his hand held high… but unfortunately that didn’t carry over into week two.
With his victory in week 1, Eric selected the terms and table for week 2 and went with Classic Mode on Theatre of Magic. This selection resulted in what was arguably the most intense week of pinball-battling. The top spot flipped back and forth constantly the entire week, sometimes multiple times within a day. We even enticed Mr. john Yan to join in on the fun! In the end, yours truly walked away with his hand held high:
As my prize for the victory, I thought that I would mix things up a bit and pick something out of the ordinary. How about trying one of Zen’s challenge modes for our competition. In this specific case, how about the Survival Challenge on The Champion Pub?
For those that don’t know, Survival Mode is one of several special modes that the Zen games offer, which takes things outside of the realm of the standard, three-ball fair. With survival you are given a set score to achieve in 2 minutes, in this case 1 million. If you manage to achieve that score, it doubles to 2 million and additional time is added to your clock. You must keep hitting the ever-growing benchmarks within the allotted time to stay alive. You get unlimited balls and can use the challenge power-ups that you have unlocked and leveled to give yourself an advantage.
I thought that this would be a fun change of pace, but unfortunately this challenge ended quickly. Despite some (what I considered) offensive and unfounded accusations by some unnamed (and non-participating members of the staff who shall not be named), I did not choose this table because I was already well ranked in this mode on the worldwide leaderboards for The Champion Pub.
I was able to quickly increase my ranking from 27th to 4th and battled it out with Joseph and Eric for a little while for that spot. However, I somehow managed a God-level run on the table within 24 hours of the start and managed to nab the top spot in the worldwide leaderboard, setting a score that wouldn’t be topped for the rest of the week. Am I happy to have won? Yes. However, I am also saddened that the intense competition felt in previous week’s never evolved with this week’s table. There is good that came from this as we got a 5th participant to join the ongoing-war as Sean Cahill has enlisted and joined in on the fun.
That’s okay… we’re onto a new week now! To the victor go the spoils, and with that, I shall choose the new challenge facing our challengers. I believe that we need to go back and play it safe for a week and head for a standard pinball challenge on a classic table, and with that, Week 4 shall consist of the following:
No gimmicks. No power-ups. Just classic chutes and rails, with some four-armed martians thrown in for fun. This is a high scoring table that can get absolutely insane, so…
Gaming Nexus Score Battle, Week 4… BEGIN!
