Where have all the dragons gone? Dragon Delves puts the dragons in dungeons back into Dungeons & Dragons

More On: Dungeons & Dragons

Something publisher Wizards of the Coast kept hearing about Dungeons & Dragons was that not enough players were facing dragons. They might run into a hundred goblins, two hundred gnolls, and three hundred kobolds. But dragons? Good luck finding the one or two included in that years-long campaign they're heading into.

Well, Wizards of the Coast has heard our plea. We want more dragons? We're getting more dragons. They're making good on their promise that "every monster is a springboard to adventure."

Dragon Delves is an anthology of 10 adventures ranging from levels 1-12. The hook? In every adventure there will be a dragon in a dungeon, guaranteed. Maybe more. My players are currently going through Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen. You'd be shocked and amazed at how few dragons they've met in a campaign setting called Dragonlance.

So in Dragon Delves, each adventure will feature a different kind of dragon. Both the good metallic dragons and the bad chromatic dragons. They will range in age from Wyrmling up to Ancient Dragon. There are four stages of life each dragon goes through: wyrmling, young adult, adult, and ancient, getting vastly more powerful—and just plain bigger—with each stage.

The adventures themselves are "set up to be as easy to run as possible." First-time Dungeon Masters and old hands alike should be able to run these with minimal preparation. That's something new and old DMs will all appreciate.

Sometimes defeating a dragon won't be as straightforward as "stab dragon with sword." Some are there as allies. Some are there to be outwitted.

Dragons await you in this collection of 10 adventures for characters level 1-12! Meet each of the chromatic and metallic dragons as you delve into unique lairs suitable for any campaign setting.

Each adventure is beautifully rendered in a different art style, includes a quick start guide, and showcases dragon art from throughout D&D’s history.

When you meet each dragon (Black, Blue, Green, Red, White, and Brass, Bronze, Copper, Gold, Silver) your DM will be pulling all the stops in order to portray their unique temperaments, alignments, and magic. The artwork pulls from some older sources, looks closely at the 2024 redesign of all D&D dragons, and also throws some of the most unique art styles I've seen from any D&D book to date.

The dragons in Dungeon Delves will, of course, be using the harder, better, faster, stronger dragons from the D&D 2024 Monster Manual. Dragons have more nuanced crowd control abilities, spellcasting features more prominently in ways they will destroy you, and even more Legendary Actions when you catch them—unfortunately for you—within their lairs.

The pre-order page for Dungeon Delves is up now and launches July 8, 2025.
