PAX 07: Lair Hands On

More On: PAX 07
I finally got a chance to play Lair for the first time at PAX. I had bypassed the game at E3 to play LittleBigPlanet and EveryDay Shooter so this was my first chance to actually see how the game played. The demo they had on the floor looked like the first level of the game as you get a chance to defend your city from an incoming fleet of ships and a wave of ice dragons.

The good news is that the game looks and sounds great. There’s a nice level of detail on the dragons and enemies and the game feels very visceral. The game doesn’t have any kind of aiming reticule but I didn’t have any real problems figuring out where my attacks where going.

The real problem is the control scheme. I know that people want to incorporate SIXAXIS motion into the games but the flight controls are just not there. This problem was further exacerbated the short lease that Sony had the controllers on at their booth. In order to execute the attacks against the other dragons you have to move the controller left to right quickly, something that is a bit hard to do when you only have a few inches of leeway to move the controller back and forth.

This may or may not be explained elsewhere but I’m still trying to figure out how the dragon riders can communicate with one another while they are flying. Is it magic, telepathy, or do they just shout really, really loudly. This is nitpicking at its best but it’s something that stuck in my craw.

If Factor 5 and adds some other mechanism to control the dragons with I think they could have a fairly solid game but if they insist on just the SIXAXIS controls they are going to turn a lot of people off.
