How the "Cool Cam" saved European Air War

I know I'm probably in the minority but I always love some of the stories behind the development of a game.  They usually humanize the developers a bit more and give you some perspective about how a particular feature or features were developed/removed.  Over at Worse Than Failure they have an interesting story about Microprose's European Air War game and how the development of the death cam feature for the game saved the project from bing canceled.  I won't ruin the story for you but it's interesting to see how the development of one small, seemingly minute feature helped keep the project from being scuttled.

I'm reminded a bit of the chainsaw bayonet from Gears of War which feature heavy resistance from Microsoft and yet turned out to be one of the more enjoyable features of the game.  Of course Gears would still have been a pretty good game without it but it would not have been nearly as good.
