Get it? RPG? side scRolling Pixel art action Games! I'll be here all week folks...

A helicopter crashes on the rooftop and a team of characters with unique abilities have to race against a horde of hungry zombies "sleepwalkers" to fix their ride and get back to safety, Highrisers is taking familiar old school visuals and side scrolling bailing action and seems to really be ramping up the RPG elements of a throwback style of game that has gotten a bit of a revive of late. This one appears to be ramping down the action in favor of ramping up the risk/reward balance of exploration into the dangerous lower floors in search of the crafting materials needed to not only beef up your arsenal, but also nab necessary food and water to keep going, and hopefully kit out your helo for a lift home, or at least a hop over to the next rooftop.

Each character, like the tech expert Jes or Ike the mechanic who can repair critically placed machines, has both their own abilities and skill tree to offer different paths to survival. The game also features (from the press release):

  • Research, Scavenge, Craft: Gain the knowledge needed to craft the right supplies, and head down into the darkness below to get them. From clubs to crossbows and tools to medicine, everything you need to survive the night is just a few floors away — just watch out for the locals, they’re not superfriendly.
  • This Building Was Different Last Time: Procedurally generated skyscrapers ensure a fresh experience each trip, but also forces your survivors to stay on their toes as they hunt for supplies in an ever-changing and always dangerous environment
  • Build Your Skills, Not Your Resume: Each character features a deep and robust skill tree that unlocks new recipes, perks, and abilities
  • We Are Like the Dreamer who Dreams: The savage somnambulators that wander the lower floors are not to be trifled with; you’ll need all your wits and tools to lure them, fight them, immobilize them, hide from them, deter them and stall them until the survivors get those precious spare parts to fix the helicopter and live to see another day!
