Pleasant-looking, somewhat wild survival game Aground arrives on consoles

More On: Aground

Aground, a survival RPG developed by Fancy Fish Games and published by Whitethorn Games, has arrived today on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. Described as a "resource-gathering and crafting game with a story", Aground puts players on a desert island as the lone survivor of a shipwreck, and follows them through settlement-building all the way to interplanetary travel.

Pretty fun trailer, right? That thing goes places. By the time it got to dragons, I had completely lost the thread - in a good way. The game looks very pleasant, but that isn't the only thing that caught my attention in a recent press release. I was also intrigued by the description of the companies responsible for Aground.

Check these out:

"Fancy Fish Games is an indie game development studio dedicated to creating imaginative and thought-provoking experiences. Games that are designed to make you think, wonder, and ask questions - either during actual play, or upon reflection. Our goal is to make games that are unlike what you have seen before. Games that are quirky, non-traditional, or metaphorical. To actually have an impact on your life, or how you think about life, even after you've finished playing our games."

Right??? Here's the other one:

"Whitethorn Games is an indie game publisher focusing on pleasant, cozy games that can be played in pieces, that require no special skills or knowledge, and that anyone can pick up and play. We’re believers in accessibility, inclusion, and widening the audience that gets to play. We like to consider ourselves the defenders of easy games."

The bolding there is theirs, not mine. I'm sure Aground is a great game and all, but the big takeaway for me is "I want to work for one of these companies."

If console gaming isn't your thing, you can also pick up Aground on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, Kartridge, Crytivo, and Itch.
