NVIDIA has gotten some criticism for ray tracing, but there's something about releasing a tech to the masses that I don't think many people realize. See, AAA studios that have a multitude of developers can spend a lot of time and money to produce great lighting effects. NVIDIA's introduction of ray tracing in a GPU and subsequent driver release allowing older cards to use the technology has allowed smaller shops to create games with incredible lighting without nearly the effort as it was before.
So what we'll be getting are games that look great from not only large studios but the indie scene as well.
Take for example, Stay in the Light. A single developer created this taking advantage of NVIDIA's RTX technology and it looks great. Reflections, shadows, lighting, all are very high quality because of RTX and all possible for an indie dev like Sunside Games.
Stay in the Light is in Early Access now, but this is an example of what's possible when the tools are presented to game developers large and small for them to churn out high quality looking games.
