The first component of the No Man's Sky BEYOND update is No Man's Sky Online

More On: No Man's Sky

No Man's Sky is the sci-fi survival sim that just won't die. Summer 2019 will introduce No Man's Sky: Beyond, the latest major update to the 2.5-year-old magnum opus from Hello Games. This teaser doesn't show much, as teasers are known to do, but I feel like the decals on that starship are more detailed than any ship I've owned before. And I personally don't recognize that station (?) interior either. It's been awhile since I've logged in, and my memory is poor.

Beyond promises some revolutionary stuff around multiplayer. Beyond will have several components, each with more details in the coming weeks. This first component is called No Man's Sky Online. From developer Sean Murray:

No Man’s Sky Online includes a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together. While this brings people together like never before, and has many recognizable online elements, we don’t consider No Man’s Sky to be an MMO—it won’t require a subscription, won’t contain microtransactions, and will be free for all existing players. These changes are an answer to how we have seen people playing since the release of NEXT, and is something we’ve dreamed of for a long time.

No Man's Sky has never had microtransactions, nor has it ever required a subscription. So I'm wondering if they're just reemphasizing that fact, or if Beyond will craft an online multiplayer experience you'd normally expect from some always-online game, just minus the extra monies. Rampant speculation on my part.

By the time No Man's Sky: Beyond launches in summer, it will have been three years since our review (7 out of 10 at the time). I can attest that I've appreciated all the free updates over the years. I'm genuinely wondering if it's time to re-review developer Sean Murray's little engine that could.

NEW MAJOR UPDATE COMING TO NO MAN’S SKY SUMMER 2019

Free Update Will Invite Players to Join "Beyond," No Man’s Sky’s Most Ambitious Chapter Yet

No Man’s Sky players around the world will be treated to the free No Man’s Sky: BEYOND update this Summer, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Introducing a brand-new social and multiplayer experience, the update promises to bring players together like never before.

United Kingdom-based indie developer Hello Games announced No Man’s Sky: BEYOND in a new trailer, teasing exciting changes that will bring players from across the universe together to explore and play online.

BEYOND’s multiplayer experience will change the way players come together and offer radical new ways to explore the universe. However, it will not require a subscription, will not contain microtransactions and will be completely free for all existing players.

Multiplayer is only one part of the colossal BEYOND update, and Hello Games will be revealing more over the coming weeks, unveiling the other exciting features coming to No Man’s Sky: BEYOND.
