Alien: Blackout coming to Android and iPhone on January 24th

More On: Alien: Blackout

FoxNext Games has announced that Alien: Blackout, the next chapter in Amanda Ripley's story, is a mobile game coming to Android and iPhone on January 25th. The very brief teaser trailer doesn't reveal much, but apparently Amanda and a small crew are trapped on a space station with a Xenomorph. Amanda must juggle the station's power systems while using surveillance cameras to keep tabs on her crew and the deadly alien. If that sounds like Five Nights at Freddy's in space to you well...that's not too far off. Hopefully the game is more engrossing than the press release and teaser trailer portray.

I have to admit, this is pretty disappointing news to me. 2014's Alien: Isolation was a near-perfect horror game and it's one of my favorite titles of the last decade. It was a real return to form for the flagging Alien franchise and it introduced an awesome new character in Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda. To see her story continued in nothing but a mobile game that sounds like a shallow retread of Isolation's basic plot is pretty heartbreaking. I admit the gameplay sounds intriguing, kind of like the very first Alien game on the ZX Spectrum, but all the same I would have preferred a true sequel on current-gen consoles or PC.

Try to stay alive while trapped aboard a crippled Weyland-Yutani space station carrying a deadly Xenomorph as it tirelessly hunts you and the crew. Outsmart the perfect hunter by making perilous choices. Players must rely on the damaged controls of the space station or risk sacrificing crew members to avoid deadly contact, permanently altering the outcome of the game.
