Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden's Lead Designer Lee Varley and Producer Mark Parker take us through the Sea Titans map. It's 20 minutes of search-and-rescue gameplay taking place about three or four hours into the game. This is the playable section that was shown to press at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, back in August.
The more I see of Mutant Year Zero the more I like it. XCOM sensibilities when it comes to turn-based combat, but a real-time world to move through between firefights. Plus Bormin, Dux and Selma are persistent characters, so there are obviously ways to progress if one of them is taken out of the fight that amounts to more than just mounting a plaque on the wall and hitting up a recruiting hall.
It's also got a sense of humor absent in the XCOM series. About a minute in, they stumble across a box containing a Fertility Crown. It's ... it's a beat-up pork pie hat with "Kiss Me Quick" inscribed on it. The flavor text pop-up says, "This elegant headpiece was used by the ancient to attract a partner, commonly found around the coastline of the Brexit Isles." I mean, c'mon. I find it humorous, anyway.
I also like the slightly unfamiliar Euro surroundings. The "Polis" cars and "Ambulans" vans could put us anywhere between Scotland and South Africa, but apparently it's Sweden. It's a dark, anthropomorphic post-apocalypse anyway, so it could've been anywhere. Also, between Generation Zero and Mutant Year Zero, Zero is very big in Sweden right now.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden arrives on PC, PS4 and Xbox on December 4.
