Turtle Rock Studios made Left 4 Dead and Evolve. But you can immediately forget about that, because Turtle Rock also just made The Well, which looks like it has absolutely nothing to do with either of those previous two. Not in looks, tone, feel, or even in a lopsided co-op gameplay sense. In fact, if you told me this was the next project from Supergiant Games (Pyre, Bastion) or even Media Molecule (Tearaway) then I'd be more prone to believe that.
But, again, it's not. So, The Well looks like cool 2D paper doll art propped up in a 3D virtual reality environment. There are dark statues located below the surface. Statues with glowing eyes. Statues with liquid gold pouring out of their eyes, too. And dog people with tentacle arms. And dog people with peacock feathers. And cats from the Crekk people. And ultraviolet voodoo frogs. And cheerful, bouncy loot boxes. And something about you needing to restore balance to the world.
The Well launches on Oculus Rift on October 11.
