More On: Dead Cells

Dead Cells, a new "rogue-lite, metroidvania action-platformer" from developer Motion Twin is out on Steam's Early Access for Windows PC players starting May 10th, starting at $16.99 with a %10 discount for the launch week.

Players control a headless corpse (that is possessed by a mass of sentient green cells) fighting its way through levels full of hard-hitting, unforgiving enemies that give the player the briefest of respites.

Motion Twin's plans are to develop Dead Cells over a period of eight to twelve months while it's in Early Access. During that time, they hope to take community feedback as well as proposed features into account. They also hope to at least double the content that is currently available. From their Steam description, players currently have about 16-20 hours for a single playthrough.

The currently available features are as follows:

  • 11 levels with varied level designs and monsters
  • 2 bosses
  • Approximately 50 weapons and skills
  • 2 special powers used to unlock new areas

One of the game's taglines is "Kill. Die. Learn. Repeat." Of course, that means only one thing: permadeath. The developers state that with each death, new avenues for loot and progression come up. The game's "Souls-like" combat looks hectic and fast-paced, and the video the developers released today does a good job showing it off.
