Sony's left hand (Electronics) doesn't know what the right hand (PS3) is doing

Engadget has the news that Sony is introducing a $600 Blu Ray player.  That's fine and dandy but wasn't one of the main selling points of the PS3 supposed to be that it was a cheap alternative to spending $1000 on a dedicated Blu Ray player?  I guess there's still the advantage of having a gaming console to go along with the Blu Ray player but this really doesn't seem to be in line with the strategy that Sony unveiled earlier this year (or at lest my perception of it).
