DLC plans for Evolve revealed, plus the 4th monster

More On: Evolve

So the DLC plans for are out for Evolve2K and Turtle Rock Studios' 4v1 monster hunter, and the verdict: not so bad. I understand that DLC has become standard in the current gaming ecosystem, and perhaps even somewhat of a necessity. I'm not particularly fond of most of it though as I am cheap gamer who doesn't like to pay for things and rarely feel the DLC on offer actually gives back value for the money. However, the plans for Evolve seem to be pretty fair.

  • All maps will be included for all players in the game. Evolve will ship with 12 maps and all additional maps will be open to all, not locked behind a paywall.
  • Even if you don't purchase the DLC, you can still battle against hunters and monsters that have. You won't get to use those characters of course, but you won't be locked out of a match as someone else takes control of a DLC character. You can fight against or with them, but just not as them.
  • As of now 4 new hunters (1 for each class) and 3 monster skins have been announced as DLC, with future plans for a 5th monster.  I would expect a bit more as well.
  • There is also a 4th monster, the Behemoth, going to be released at launch that will freely available to those that pre-ordered the game. It can also be unlocked through DLC in the $14.99 Monster Expansion Pack to be released later.
  • There will be a season pass at $24.99 that will include all of the planned DLC. The pass saves you about 5 bucks from buying each separately. There is also a Digital Deluxe Edition that nets you the game and season pass for $79.99, saving yet another 5 bucks.

All in all I think it's good news for anyone who wants to play Evolve. Every map, every match will be open to you whether you shell out for the extras or not, it just might limit who you can choose to be, not where or when you can play. On the other hand, I'm not totally convinced that $24.99 is worth it for extra skins and hunter classes. I'll need to reserve judgement until I really see what's going to be in that $14.99 Monster Expansion Pack.

More info about the DLC and Turtle Rock's opinions on doing DLC right can be found on the Evolve official website. There is also a breakdown of what is included in each of the standard and special additions (including PC Monster Race Edition) available at launch and lots more info on the Behemoth as well as a new trailer for the monster which is below.
