What We're Playing: Heart of the Tiger Doom Edition

More On: What we're playing

A new study suggests that playing an hour of video games every day is good for you, and playing three or four hours ain't all that bad either. People are bidding upwards of $300 on eBay for Destiny's $150 Ghost special edition. And Star Citizen added 50,000 more beta testers to its multiplayer arena dogfighting module.

What are you playing this weekend?

This will be my last weekend before GenCon in which I can do any major PC gaming, so I'll likely spend it playing some Final Fantasy VII and Mega Man Unlimited. FF7 because I swear I'll finish it this calendar year. As for Mega Man Unlimited, I checked out v1.2.0 and the additions are worth looking at if you've already played it. Whirlpool Man's stage has a couple of interesting mechanics to it, as well as an annoying mid-boss you have to fight twice, while Whirlpool Man himself is a piece of cake once you learn his weakness. It downright cripples him. I might also stream some Endless Mode runs over at www.twitch.tv/NeoScyther on Friday, provided it streams okay (in the past when I've recorded footage it actually slowed down the game a bit).

I'll primarily be playing Sherpa for my wife as she competes in the Triathlon National Championship (for amateurs) in Wisconsin. When it's her turn to drive I'll be playing games on my phone. Not sure what yet.

I'm taking a week off from Doom for something completely different: Quake! I reinstalled the DarkPlaces mod for the Steam version which really brings the 1996 classic up to (relatively) modern standards. The mod's dynamic lighting, real-time shadows, smoother animations and particle effects really emphasize the brilliant gothic architecture and creepy Lovecraftian themes in Quake. John Romero might have had a falling out with id over Quake's ultimate direction and you can say what you will about his ego, but the man was a god of level design.

The theme for my gaming this weekend will be loot, loot and more loot. This comes as I explore the world of Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition on the PlayStation 4 in preparation for the game's launch next week. I have been waiting for this version after dipping my toes into both the Xbox 360 and PC versions. There is just something intriguing about the thought of laying in my bed at night and playing the game on my Vita via remote play. Perhaps I will become addicted to this version as badly as John is on the PC.

This weekend will be about firing up Sarah's Mech (two-wheeled edition) for another Pelotonia.  Pelotonia is an annual bike ride in Columbus, Ohio, to raise money for cancer research, and 100% of the donated funds go straight to cancer research (corporate sponsors pay for all of the admin costs). This year I'm riding 100 miles in honor of my Uncle Steve who passed away in June after a long battle with multiple myeloma. Donations to my ride can be made here. I might try to squeeze in some Last of Us this weekend, but given that the ride is so physically and emotionally draining (there are survivors and families along the entire route) I might just sleep the rest of the weekend.

EA handed out free copies of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger this week. So, thanks, Electronic Arts, for the free ride back to 1994. I'm gonna go ahead and put on a pair of JNCOs, listen to Da Brat's Funkdafied and pull out my AD&D 2nd Edition books while calculating THAC0. Not because I'm nostalgic for 1994. That's just what I do every weekend.

I've decided to take a break from The Legend of Zelda's Second Quest after beating my head against the walls of the fifth dungeon over and over and over again. I realized I haven't played Rogue Legacy since the first patch came out, so I've been playing that and seeing what's "new." Also, Secret Ponchos just introduced the Matador, as well as a new level and game mode. I'll have have to check those out.

I'll be playing some real life Tetris this weekend as I condense my 12x8 PODS container down to a 10x5 storage room. Pray for mojo. On the actual gaming side, I wrapped up all the Muramasa Rebirth DLC that's available, and have found myself going back to Persona 4 Golden so I can get that platinum trophy. With Fez available from PSN Plus, I'll be juggling between that and Child of Light.
