The Evil Within emerges on August 26th

More On: The Evil Within

Since its announcement, The Evil Within has been touted by Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami as a true return for survival horror. Now we have a release date: August 26th in North America, and then the 29th for Europe. The game concerns detective Sebastian Castellanos, who witnesses his fellow police officers getting slaughtered by an unknown force and subsequently wakes up in a world of monsters and shambling dead.

Supposedly, scarce resources and "horrifying anxiety" will be key elements within the game. This does sound like a true return to form for Mikami, which would have been a big deal a few years ago. That said, the Amnesia series and Outlast have already been eating Resident Evil's lunch for a couple years now, and with the procedurally generated Daylight and Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation hitting later this year as well, you have to wonder just how much relevance The Evil Within still has.

I'm optimistic; hopefully the bigger publishers are waking up to the fact that cover based shooting isn't terribly scary, and turning Dead Space and Resident evil into action movies wasn't the best of ideas.
