Shinji Mikami reveals The Evil Within

More On: The Evil Within
I think we can safely say that the Resident Evil series has lost its way. Come to think of it, so has most of the mainstream horror genre. Sure we have indie hits like Amnesia and Lone Survivor, but survival horror has been slowly shifting to drama and action, and successors to some of the scariest games ever, like System Shock 2, just aren't scary at all. Bioshock dialed back the creepiness considerably, and while Bioshock Infinite is a great game, it dispenses with the terror altogether.

I think it's time for the father of survival horror, Shinji Mikami, to remind everyone how it's done. And that's exactly what the Resident Evil creator is doing. His latest project has been announced as The Evil Within, being developed at Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda. The teaser trailer is completely live action and reminds me of the deliciously gory, practical-effects bargain bin horror flicks of the 90s, and it does indeed look scary. There's not much more in terms of concrete details, but The Evil Within should be hitting PS3, 360 and PC and "next generation consoles" sometime next year.
