Riot Games has announced some impressive statistics regarding the number of players in the League of Legends community. In just four months, the number of active players doubled reaching 11.5 million surpassing World of Warcraft's 10.3 million. Other numbers include a total of over 30 million registered players with over four million of them playing everyday. At peak hours of gameplay, there are over 1.3 million players logged into the game. League of Legends will soon enter its second season that features a prize pool of five million dollars for potential winners.

I must admit to never having played League of Legends, however, it now might be the perfect time to discover the source of popularity behind the game. Visit the League of Legends website for information on how to begin playing the game.
League of Legends Community More than Doubles in Just Four Months, Surpassing 11 Million Active Players as Riot Games Prepares to Kick Off Season Two

Over Four Million People Play League of Legends Every Day with Over 30 Million Registered Players

LOS ANGELES – Nov. 18, 2011 – Riot Games today announced that over four million people play League of Legends every day – a staggering increase of more than double since Riot last announced the size of its community in July 2011. With 11.5 million monthly active players, peak concurrency reaching 1.3 million, and a registered player base of over 30 million worldwide, League of Legends is about to enter its second competitive season as one of the top five PC games in North America and Europe.

Set to begin in the very near future, League of Legends: Season Two will feature an unprecedented prize pool of five million dollars – the largest in eSports history – culminating in a global $2 million tournament where Riot will crown the best League of Legends team in the world. Players can look forward to comprehensive coverage of the eSports scene, game features like spectator mode and ranked teams, and a competitive structure that encourages talented players to team up and compete.

“The incredible passion and dedication of our players is positively inspiring,” said Brandon Beck, co-founder and CEO of Riot Games. “Our community’s boundless enthusiasm is why they are central to every decision we make at Riot.”

“It’s staggering to think about the fact that over a billion games of League of Legends have been played since launch,” said Marc Merrill, co-founder and President of Riot Games. “In 2012, we intend to deliver even more for our growing audience.”

League of Legends, Riot Games’ debut title, celebrated its second anniversary on Oct. 27, 2011. Since its launch, over 30 million players have downloaded the game to engage in session-based, multiplayer battles against rival teams, with more than four million players enjoying League of Legends every day.
