E3 2011: Star Trek not a Sony exclusive

More On: E3 2011 Star Trek: The Video Game
Contrary to what I posted earlier this week, it appears as if the upcoming Star Trek video game is not exclusive to the PlayStation 3. Paramount Digital Entertainment has announced that Star Trek is currently in development for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. There is a bit of a Sony-exclusive agreement involved though as the PlayStation 3 version of the game will be receiving exclusive, standalone, prerelease DLC content.

Other details about the game have been correctly reported. The game is a cooperative, third person shooter that puts players into the roles of Kirk and Spock. The game is currently being developed by Digital Extremes, the same development studio who handed Dark Sector and BioShock 2. The game is due out in 2012 alongside the new film.

You can found the official press release regarding the game’s announcement on the next page.
PARAMOUNT DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT UNVEILS STAR TREK™ TEASER GAME TRAILER AND SONY EXCLUSIVE CONTENT AT SONY’S KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT 2011 ELECTRONIC ENTERTAINMENT EXPOSITION (E3)

Los Angeles, CA – June 8, 2011 – Paramount Digital Entertainment unveiled the first Star Trek™ teaser videogame trailer and Sony exclusive Star Trek content during Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s keynote address at its annual E3 press conference in Los Angeles, CA. In addition, Sony announced exclusive Star Trek content, including a Star Trek PlayStation®Move Phaser attachment, and exclusive PlayStation®Network stand-alone Star Trek pre-release downloadable content.

The game, which continues the adventure that director and producer J.J. Abrams’ envisioned with Star Trek (2009), boasts a story filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy. And for the first time ever, players are cast as Captain James T. Kirk and Spock in an unprecedented co-op experience.

“Most teaser trailers feature zero gameplay, but we’re proud to introduce Star Trek to the world with a first look made up entirely of pre-Alpha gameplay to show how great the game looks even though it is more than a year off,” said Tom Lesinski, President Paramount Digital Entertainment. “The level of quality and authenticity to the new Star Trek (2009) universe is a testament to talent of the team and the strong collaboration between Digital Extremes and the filmmakers.”

“Sony’s Move technology and built-in online community make for an unparalleled platform to bring the Trek gaming experience to life,” said John Kavanagh, Senior Vice President, Paramount Digital Entertainment. “Players will be fully immersed in the co-op action with an authentic Phaser Move controller in hand, and PS3 players will have the first chance to dive in to the adventure with Sony exclusive DLC before the full retail game comes out.”

Star Trek features an original story by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer, Marianne Krawczyk, in collaboration with the writer/producers of the 2009 Star Trek films, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

The game is under development by Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2, Unreal Tournament, Dark Sector, The Darkness II), working closely with Bad Robot, K/O Paper Products and Damon Lindelof, and published by Paramount Digital Entertainment through a license with CBS Consumer Products. Star Trek will be coming to the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC in 2012.

Paramount Digital Entertainment will be providing a first look at the title to press during the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, June 7-9, 2011. To schedule an appointment please contact Casey Lynch, casey@reverbinc.com.
