Following the announcement of the new console at this morning’s press conference, Nintendo has released some of the specifications and a few images of its new console. The Nintendo Wii U is headed for retailers some time in 2012 and will feature the following:
  • controller featuring 6.2 inch, 16x9 touch screen. Rechargeable. Includes power button, two slide pads, Home button, d-pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons, ZL/ZR buttons, accelerometer, gyro sensor, rumble feature, camera, mic, speaker, sensor, touch pen.
  • full backwards compatability with all Wii peripherals including Wiimotes, Wiimote Plus, Wii Balance board, Classic controller, and Classic controller Plus, up to four devices can connect at once
  • utilizes a new 12cm high density optical disc designed for the new hardware as well as the classic Wii DVD media
  • video output capabilities include 1080P, 1080i, 720P, 480P, 480i
  • video connection options include HDMI, component, S-video, and composite
  • built in flash memory (size not listed) and supports SD cards and external USB hard drives
  • includes 4 USB ports

There are still plenty of details left to be filled on on Nintendo’s new hardware but the groundwork seems solid. I was really impressed with what was shown at this morning’s conference but not quite ready to jump back on their bandwagon. We see that they have the arsenal on hand, but lets see how they use it...
