CES 2010: ASUS

ASUS has long been a motherboard company but they’ve branched out into being one producing great netbooks and other items. Gary Key was nice enough to give me a tour of the booth and show off some of the gaming offerings that they had.

The G73Jh is their next top of the line gaming laptop that will feature the upcoming ATI Radeon Mobility 5870. If you read my report from AMD earlier, you know this will be the top of line mobile discrete solution for the near future. This gaming laptop has a striking 17.3” screen and features either an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor. Up to 8GB of DDR3 memory can be used with the system and it features dual 500GB SATA HDs for a total of 1TB of data. What’s also cool is you can also do RAID 0 or 1 with the setup. The entire laptop features a nice soft touch along with a very large trackpad area at the bottom. For comfort, there’s a slight slope in the wrist rest area which should help typing on the laptop to be a little more comfortable. Retailing for around $1700, this is a great price for what you can get in a desktop replacement for gaming.

As you probably are aware, NVIDIA announced some partners in developing some 3D laptops and ASUS is one of them. Pictured below is the G51J3D which will come with the 3D Vision glasses and IR emitter needed to experience your games and movies in 3D. Yes, this means the laptop has a 120Hz panel so you’ll get some smooth video with or without turning on 3D. The 15.6” laptop houses an Intel Core i7 CPU with a NVIDIA GTX 160M. It should be out in a month or so with a 17” version coming later on down the road.

One of the things that really blew me away was the PG276H LCD monitor. That thing you see is a 27” 120Hz panel that was just plain awesome to see in person. Since the show had a big emphasis on 3D, the PG276H will deliver 27” of 1920x1080 3D gaming goodness when it’s released later this year. Yeah, I want one bad.

I came away from the ASUS booth wanting many things they had on display and it was great to see how much they’ve changed over the years with what they are offering now. You can see the rest of the ASUS items below.
