PS3 Price drop coming soon? Not so fast

On the heels of their surprise PSP announcements on Tuesday at the Destination Playstation event, there is at least one analyst group that thinks a PS3 price drop is imminent, if not happening very soon. Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey said in his latest industry note that "recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days."

This sounds like great news, but then Hickey makes what I can only refer to as a boneheaded statement that undermines his credibility: "We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction."

Not only is this laughable, it would require Sony to basically dismantle the PS3 program and start from the ground up. I mean, seeing as how every PS3 game on the market uses a Blu-Ray disc and at the least, would render the entire back catalog incompatible and force future titles to be in both formats.

Well, GameDaily called SCEA and was told that "there is definitely no price drop on PS3 being planned at the moment" and that "Sony is on track to meet their 10 million sold PS3 mark for the year."

Thanks to GameDaily for the info.
