This has been one of the greatest and worst quarters for gaming ever. Developers have shipped more high quality titles in the last six weeks than they have all year (
Gears of War 2,
Resistance 2,
Fallout 3,
LittleBigPlanet,
Red Alert 3 to name a few). While it's nice to see all these high quality titles it is a bit frustrating for gamers as there is simply not enough time to play them all. Personally I doubt if I'm ever going to get around to
Fallout 3 or
Red Alert 3 because I just don't have the time to play them as I'm knee deep in other games. This is amazingly frustrating as I would like to have time to play them but it's just not in the cards.
This is why Stardock's
strategy of releasing games early in the year makes a lot of sense. There's usually a lull in releases between January and March and without a lot of noise from other games it's easy to get your game noticed and in front of people. I would point out that we didn't see much of a lull this year and early next year will have Killzone 2 and a few other titles but it's still a great strategy and hopefully more publisher will realize that it's not about cramming twenty different games down the throat of gamers at the end of the year.
