Kickstarter Watch: Massive Chalice by Double Fine

More On:
A couple of months ago, we received word from the people at Double Fine Productions that they would be turning to Kickstarter to fund their next project that is entitled Massive Chalice.  The title is expected to be a 3D tactics game with fantasy elements.  While the company was able to pull in over $3 million for their last project, Massive Chalice is looking as though it will not command nearly as much.  Tim Schafer, CEO of Double Fine, while praising Kickstarter has said that this project only has a goal of $725,000 by June 27.  If you want to donate, be sure to check out the link to the page below.

DOUBLE FINE LAUNCHES KICKSTARTER PROJECT TO FUND MASSIVE CHALICE

CROWDFUNDED FANTASY TACTICS GAME FOLLOWS UP RECORD-SETTING DOUBLE FINE ADVENTURE PROJECT

SAN FRANCISCO—May 30, 2013—Double Fine Productions is proud to announce a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to develop MASSIVE CHALICE, an upcoming 3D fantasy tactics game with a multi-generational twist.

Helmed by longtime Double Fine veteran Brad Muir, project lead of Iron Brigade, MASSIVE CHALICE blends turn-based squad tactics gameplay with a grand strategy layer. As an immortal king or queen, the player will develop a powerful dynasty over an epic century-spanning timeline, training generations of heroes to repel a demonic invasion.

The MASSIVE CHALICE Kickstarter follows up Double Fine Adventure, the studio's record-setting Kickstarter project that raised $3.3 million last year. Broken Age, the Tim Schafer-led adventure game funded by that campaign, is currently in full development.

Muir will direct a separate internal team to develop MASSIVE CHALICE for Windows, Mac, and Linux using the Buddha Engine, Double Fine's internal 3D technology used to create award-winning games including Brütal Legend, Iron Brigade, Costume Quest, Stacking, The Cave, and more. Schafer will remain primarily focused on leading Broken Age to completion.

"Double Fine is committed to remaining independent, and that includes being responsible to our fans above all else," said Double Fine president & CEO Tim Schafer. "Kickstarter allows us to do exactly that."

"We love tactical strategy games, roguelikes, and the idea of powerful Game of Thrones-style royal dynasties—MASSIVE CHALICE brings all of that together in a unique Double Fine package," said MASSIVE CHALICE lead Brad Muir, who then abruptly collapsed in a heap on the floor.

"Sorry about that," Schafer said. "Brad has an iron deficiency."

"No, I'm just exhausted from doing all those publisher pitches," croaked Muir.

Backer rewards include DRM-free and Steam copies of the game for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as a limited edition t-shirt and signed art print designed by Cory Schmitz (Soundshapes, Polygon), and the ability to name and design a noble house inside the game world.

MASSIVE CHALICE has a Kickstarter backing goal of $725,000 by June 27, which will allow the team to deliver the game in late 2014—but if the goal is exceeded, Double Fine can appropriately increase the scope and quality of the game while maintaining the same release schedule.
