EA CEO calls out video games. irony levels near record highs

In an interview with the WSJ yesterday (Reuters summary here), EA CEO John Riccitiello issued the following statement in regards to the video game industry:

"We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play,"

He then followed that up with this doozy:

"For the most part, the industry has been rinse-and-repeat," he was quoted as saying. "There's been lots of product that looked like last year's product, that looked a lot like the year before."

It's hard to disagree with him but then again to take quotes like that from the CEO of the company that makes the majority of their money cranking out sports sequels every year and has nearly cornered the market on milking franchises to death (*cough* The Sims *cough*).  To their credit EA has started to move away from licensed games and is investing a lot of money into creating new IP's but this is really one of those situtions where the pot is calling the kettle black.
