GUNNAR Fallout Brotherhood of Steel Glasses

With the recent season of Fallout on TV, GUNNAR has produced a few Fallout-themed glasses to go along with the show. Their first one was a Vault-inspired pair, which I purchased a few months ago and enjoyed using. Their second one is inspired by the Brotherhood of Steel and GUNNAR was kind enough to send a pair for review.

The Brotherhood of Steel edition are aviator-style glasses that come with the same style case as the Vault 33 edition but in black and with Area 51 branding on the top. Inside the top lid of the case is a pretty nice red silk emblem of the Brotherhood of Steel. Included as well are a microfiber cleaning cloth and a soft carrying pouch. The pouch is gray and has the Brotherhood of Steel logo on the side while the cleaning cloth has a picture of Maximus on a poker chip.

As for the glasses themselves, the glasses have a nice gray frame with a weathered pattern around it. GUNNAR says the color scheme is made to mimic steel plating of the game’s power armor, which I think it does nicely. The metal frame design is close to GUNNAR’s Maverick-style glasses with a connector piece above the bridge of the nose. The sides where the temples are connected, though, have a thicker design giving it a little more depth.

Speaking of the temples, GUNNAR fixed one of the issues I had with the Vault 33 edition and that’s to include spring hinges on these. As one who wears glasses every day, I always search out frames with spring hinges to help alleviate any stress on the temples. The inclusion of these on the Brotherhood of Steel edition is one that I really welcome in this design. On the right temple facing out near the spring hinge is a small red dot. I’m guessing it’s also meant to be the Brotherhood of Steel logo, but because it’s so small that there’s really no detail there. On the inside left temple are the words Ad Victoriam, the common phrase uttered by the Brotherhood of Steel, in red lettering. The ends of the temple are coated in a soft material, and they do sit comfortably on the top of my ears when worn.

As for the lenses themselves, they are the patented lenses that help those who spend a ton of time in front of the computer. I was sent the classic amber color, which blocks out 65% of blue light at 450 nm. It didn’t take me long to get used to the slight yellow color and I’ve pretty much gotten used to them having worn the Vault 33 editions when I am working. There are a good variety of colors that you can choose from giving a wide range of blue blocking capabilities. If you do need something that’s not as color tinted, you can opt for the clearer lenses which are designed for those who work in fields needing color accuracy.

The lenses do have a slight prism and magnification to them. They aren’t too much—around 0.2+ diopter of power—but that slight magnification does help relieve some eye strain when reading. Also, the slight prism effect helps relieve the muscles on the outside of the eye a tiny bit. The two combined help relieve eye strain when wearing them.

These are the second pair I have and my prescription is pretty wonky with one eye being nearsighted and one eye being farsighted and requiring prism lenses. GUNNAR’s prescription department had no trouble filling the order in a timely manner. If you want progressive lenses, GUNNAR offers those as well, so they do provide a good number of services to produce a set of lenses for your specific needs.

The Brotherhood of Steel editions should have a small logo etched into the bottom right corner of the lens, but on mine it’s not there and that could be due to me getting prescription lenses. I don’t know if they forgot to add it to mine or if it’s only on the nonprescription ones. The small GUNNAR etching is on the top left corner of my left lens though. Either way, it’s not going to affect anything as I don’t see the GUNNAR etching when using the glasses and I can’t tell you if the logo would have any effect on your vision since it’s not on mine. I’m going to say since it’s so small and out of the way you won’t notice it.

For the dimensions, here’s how it shapes out:

  • lens width: 59 mm
  • lens height: 52 mm
  • nose: 17 mm
  • frame width: 142 mm
  • temple: 142 mm
  • weight: 39.4 grams

After wearing them for a good 8+ hours a day for the past few days, I can say they are very lightweight and unnoticable on my face. The spring hinges help it so I don’t feel any clamping force on the temples and the large lenses make it so almost my entire field of view is taken up by the glasses. The nose pads are pretty standard silicon nose pads which can change angles. All told, the Brotherhood of Steel editions do fit more comfortably on my face than the Vault 33 editions and a lot of it is due to the spring hinges. When I go back to the Vault 33 edition, I do feel it slightly more on the sides due to the absence of the spring hinges, but it’s not uncomfortable. With the two on hand, I do find myself reaching more for the Brotherhood of Steel edition because I don’t feel the glasses as much when I have them on. Of course, this will be dependent on the size and shape of your head.

For nonprescription folks, the Brotherhood of Steel edition comes in at $99, which is in line with their other two Fallout-inspired glasses. Depending on your prescription, the costs will go up from there. And remember, if you get prescription ones, they are nonrefundable. So, keep that in mind. If you’re a fan of the game or TV show, these are nice little glasses to get, and I think they do provide some benefit if you’re working in front of a screen for a long time. The case that it comes with is very nice and will keep your glasses well protected. It’s up to you, of course, if you like the aviator-style, but there are currently two other designs right now if you want a pair with a Fallout theme that might match your taste more.

A nice set of aviator glasses, the GUNNAR Brotherhood of Steel set delivers lenses that help eye strain and are comfortable to wear.

Rating: 8.5 Very Good

About Author

I've been reviewing products since 1997 and started out at Gaming Nexus. As one of the original writers, I was tapped to do action games and hardware. Nowadays, I work with a great group of folks on here to bring to you news and reviews on all things PC and consoles.

As for what I enjoy, I love action and survival games. I'm more of a PC gamer now than I used to be, but still enjoy the occasional console fair. Lately, I've been really playing a ton of retro games after building an arcade cabinet for myself and the kids. There's some old games I love to revisit and the cabinet really does a great job at bringing back that nostalgic feeling of going to the arcade.
