Sony and Electronic Arts have announced that the first Battlefield 3 expansion pack, known as Back to Karkand, will launch next week on the PlayStation Network. Gamers will be able to get their hands on the new content beginning December 6. As announced previously, Sony has a one week head start on the other platforms as it will not release on the Xbox 360 or PC until December 13.

Back to Karkand is a themed expansion pack for the game with features 4 classic maps in the new Frostbite 2 engine. Fans of the series should recognize new versions of Wake Island, Sharqi Peninsula, Gulf of Oman, and Strike at Karkand. There are also a couple of new vehicles being added into the fray including the VSTOL fighter jet, Desert Buggy, and the APC as well as 10 new weapons.

The package will be free to owners of the limited edition version of the game while everyone else will have to pay the asking price of $14.99.
