In made up, and completely insane, sports news...

More On: EVE Online
Eve Online, that cool looking space-based RTS with a focus on epic naval warfare that makes me cry when I think about how I'll probably never own a computer that can run it, you're familiar with it, right?

Well, you're probably not familiar with what its creators at CCP have recently engaged in, then put the videos on the Internet for the whole world to see/be confused by it's existence:

It's called Chessboxing, and it's exactly what it sounds like.  Or maybe it's not, because you can't wrap your mind about what it entails.  In actuality, it's rounds of chess that alternate with rounds of boxing (rounds of existential crisis-counseling are not confirmed).

The "bout" between Bjorn "Left Rook" Jonsson (CCP's resident chess expert) and Daniel "Pretty Boy" Borarinsson (Iceland's 2009 boxing champ) can be seen in the video below.

If you're interested in finding out more about Chessboxing, visit its homepage.  The short version is that it began when Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh, inspired by fictional depictions by French comic book and filmmaker Enki Bilal, organized actual bouts.

For the record, it was a charity event.  For more info on the charity involved (providing assistance to children with anxiety disorders and special needs), click here (Warning: it's in Icelandic).

In the ultimate battle of Brain vs. Pain, two video game artists from CCP, creator of the epic sci-fi PC game EVE Online, went glove to ... pawn (?) last month in a CHESSBOXING competition of the ages at CCP’s annual EVE Fanfest event.

The video of the fight was just released: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJy2kIWtyvQ. Thought you might be interested in posting it, or just watching it for some comedic relief :)

The video shows Björn "Left Rook" Jónsson, CCP’s resident chess expert, and Daniel "Pretty Boy" Þórarinsson, Iceland’s 2009 boxing champion, in a one-of-a-kind fight taking place at the Laugardalshöll Convention Center in Iceland.

Did brains beat brawn? Did youth triumph over age? Watch the video to find out!

Here’s the documentary about the fight that was released prior to the event; it’s quite clever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaBWBmYfqVQ

For background, Chessboxing (http://wcbo.org/content/e14/index_en.html) is a hybrid sport that combines boxing with chess in alternating rounds. The sport began when Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh, inspired by fictional depictions by French comic book artist and filmmaker Enki Bilal, organized actual bouts.

(Also... this battle royale' was held to benefit sjónarhóll (http://www.sjonarholl.net/), an Icelandic charity providing assistance to children with anxiety disorders and special needs)
