Sony has announced the official pricing for the PlayStation Vita memory cards and the picture isn’t a pretty one. Thanks to the fact that the Vita will be using a proprietary memory card format, the prices aren’t exactly in line with what you would expect for standard cards of the same sizes.

The size and pricing lineup will be as follows:
  • 4GB for $29.99
  • 8GB for $44.99
  • 16GB for $69.99
  • 32GB for $119.99
Considering just how much information you will be required to store, this space will get used up rather quickly. Sony has stated that their reasoning for using the proprietary format is to address security concerns, which makes sense on one hand but damn those are expensive. There is a rumor circulating though that could lesson this blow a bit.

Supposedly, Sony is planning to discount its digital software offerings on the platform offer the retail offerings by up to 40%. This would make a lot of sense and is something many of us have been waiting for a company to do for years now. This method would help to make up the difference that you are spending on the over-priced memory cards, but that is only if it turns out to be true.
