CES 2010: Innovations on the Floor – Samsung SyncMaster MD230

Samsung is always one of my favorite stops on the show floor, because they always have one or two exceptional items in their booth. This year was no different, as Samsung trotted out their highly impressive SyncMaster MD230 gaming display to the show floor. It is a wrap-around display system that can be purchased in either a three ($1,899 MSRP) or six ($3,099 MSRP) screen bundle that includes the stand and is powered by ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology.

Because the individual monitors feature some of the thinnest bezels on the market, there is very little distance between each seam where the panels connect together. Another cool option is that it will display the game (or whatever you are using it for) in full resolution. For example, the 6-screen setup (seen in the images below) was displaying Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. at a full 5760 x 2160 resolution at 60Hz. While the refresh is rated at 8ms (not sure if that is individual monitors, or when configured as a group), both demos on display ran smooth without any hitches or delays.

The screens can be mounted vertical or horizontal depending on your preference and what you are using the monitors for the most. Gamers will probably want the full horizontal wrap-around, while someone that uses it for stocks, news or coding would probably want it arranged vertically.

From all the gaming products I encountered on the show floor this week, the SyncMaster MD230 takes the cake as the most desirable for the hardcore gamer. The MD230 is available now in either configuration and will require a new ATI card that supports the Eyefinity multi-screen technology.
