Don’t call it a comeback: SNK returns

More On:

It has been a long time since the letters “SNK” appeared on their own on the front of some of the industry's most popular fighting games. The company, which was best known for the creation of the Neo Geo system(s) and such great franchises as Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters and Samurai Showdown, came to an abrupt end in 2001. The company filed bankruptcy and was ultimately purchased by Playmore through the legal proceedings. They were then rebranded as SNK Playmore and continued to produce titles for other systems and platforms.

In the years since then, the company has regained its footing both financially and in gaming industry, focusing heavily on the mobile and Japanese arcade moment. Things have picked up over the past couple of years in particular for them thanks to the resurgence of the fighting game genre. Now, it is going to be like things never changed as SNK Playmore has announced a major rebranding of itself, returning solely to the original, iconic name of SNK.

The change doesn’t really effect anything in terms of the company’s projects or overall outlook. The change is purely image related and honestly, should serve them will going forward with the classic name and logo. The first game that will see the benefits of the new branding is the upcoming King of Fighters XIV. The change is already noticeable in the most recent trailers for the game and should help rekindle fond memories of just what the development house is capable of in the fighting game genre.

Long live SNK!
