The Culling is The Hunger Games with less romance, more axes in skulls

More On: The Culling

Do you want the televised savagery of The Hunger Games but without the ambiguous teen romance? The Culling could be your answer. It's 16-player combat, 20 minutes at a time, with only one winner. It's like an open-world survival game without the ambiguity of having to shout out "friendly, not-friendly?"

The players have 20 minutes to scavenge for materials, build or find weapons, and then spear/shoot/chainsaw/spike trap each other to death. Sounds like a good time. And watch to the end of the trailer. It's brutal. And the announcer nails the punch line.

The Culling is the second game from developer Xaviant. Its first, Lichdom: Battlemage, featuring one "bad-ass mage" with thousands of spells, set the stage for The Culling's fast-paced action.

The Culling is on Steam Early Access on March 8.

Jump into a remote island paradise and join a 16-player battle for supremacy as you explore, scavenge items, craft weapons, and build traps that will enable you to slay your fellow contestants and emerge victorious before the end of the round.

Only with cunning, skill and a little luck will you be able to prevail and survive the deadly game of life and death that is The Culling.

I asked a small, talented team to come up with their dream game and gave them the autonomy to build it,?? said Michael McMain, Founder and CEO of Xaviant. "The Culling is the result of that effort. It has been the highlight of my career!"

Unlike add-on modes in open-world survival games, The Culling redefines the battle royale genre by providing a tightly focused stand-alone experience that delivers incredible thrills and a competitive arena for players to duke it out. Only one will be crowned the winner. Do you have the guts to survive?
