Sony offering protection plans for PS3 and PSP

by: Dan -
This is kind of an interesting development, as SCEA announced today that they will be selling Protection Plans for both the PlayStation 3 and PSP. Owners of either system will have the option to purchase a one or two year extension for anywhere from $29.99 to $59.99. Based on the pricing that places like Best Buy or Gamestop charge, this is actually a pretty good deal and might be Sony taking a shot across the bow of its retail partners. The one caveat is that plans must be purchased within the first 30 days of owning the system.  Check out the configurations below:

• PS3 – 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
• PSP – 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
• PSP with Accidental Damage – 1-year extension ($39.99) or 2-year extension ($49.99)

I wonder if there is a protection plan against Sony stripping features out of the console post-sale?

Extended Service Program Gives PS3 and PSP Owners the Option to Purchase One or Two Years of Additional Coverage Beyond the One-Year Manufacturer's Warranty

The pricing includes all shipping charges and repairs, which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians using official parts at SCEA-authorized repair facilities.
