Psyonix using Unreal 3

It looks like Unreal Engine 3 is the new Quake 3 engine--everybody's using it.  The latest studio to join the club is Psyonix, and they're using it to develop Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars (whew!), a game for Playstation Network.  Unreal 3 is capable of some impressive graphics, I just hope Psyonix can bypass the smeary placeholder textures that show up in some games.  Those ugly things ruined Bioshock for me...in addition to the somewhat shallow, Halo fan-friendly gameplay.  Wait, did I type that outloud?

PSYONIX STUDIOS LICENSES UNREAL ENGINE 3

Number one game engine to fuel 'Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars' for PLAYSTATION(R) Network

El SEGUNDO, Calif. - Sept. 8, 2008 - Psyonix Studios announced today that the company has entered into an agreement with Epic Games to license Unreal Engine 3 for its upcoming game, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, an arena-based online auto sports game for PLAYSTATION(R) Network.

"We've been working with other studios using Unreal technology for years now," said Dave Hagewood, director of development, Psyonix Studios. "I'm very proud to be licensing the engine for our first title developed entirely in-house and am blown away by the fact that Epic goes out of its way to make its industry-leading technology affordable for developers of games like this."

"Finding ways to bring our engine technology to creative, independent studios is important to us, and Psyonix is a team that really fits the mold," said Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games. "Battle-Cars does a great job demonstrating the versatility of Unreal Engine 3. I think PLAYSTATION®Network users are going to find it to be fun and unique."

Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars features vehicles with incredible physics-based maneuverability, including boosters for launching high into the air or accelerating at break-neck speeds on the ground. In the air, cars can roll, flip, jump, dodge or spin. In the BattleBall Arena team-based soccer game, players maneuver their vehicles to perform breathtaking saves, awe-inspiring shots on goal, and gruesome demolishes of opponent cars. These abilities, combined with the players' own creativity, create a unique and thrilling experience every time.

Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars is expected to be available in early fall 2008.
