Sony announced today that the UMD movies (the proprietary format the that PSP uses) will be sold for $19.99 a piece. The titles available at the system's launch will be XXX, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Hellboy
and Once Upon a Time in Mexico
. Also, a UMD version of The House of Flying Daggers
will be available on April 19 at the $29.99 price point. A lot of fuss has been made about how the UMD movies are costing more than DVDs but you have to remember, these are retail price points. DVD's come with an MSRP of something like $29.99 but common-sense retailers tend to sell them well below that price. I'm betting that most retailers will eventually end up selling UMD movies at around the $15-to-$20 price point. And besides, Sony is selling the UMDs over in Japan at $36 a pop, consider yourself lucky.
