CDV
- War Front is yet another WWII RTS game from CDV but this one has an alternative history twist. The premise for the game is that Hitler was assassinated early on in World War II and the Germans stopped their progress towards dominating Europe. The Russians then seized the opportunity and invaded Europe. The US was forced to respond and ends up allying themselves with the Germans to stop the spread of the Red Menace. Making the game more interesting is that the game includes new weapons and vehicles that were either on the drawing board at the end of WWII or were produced and never saw action. For example the Germans get a B1 looking stealth type bomber and an exo-skeleton type of unit while the US gets an Earthquake bomb as well as the standard nuke that gamers have grown to love. An interesting twist to the standard RTS game play is that you can actually take over stationary turrets in the game and control them yourself.
- Panthers DS is CDV’s first non PC game and can best be described as a mashup of Panzer General and Advance Wars. The game looks to be to be the first real RTS type game for the DS and will feature over 150 units for would be DS generals. Gamers who want to get in a quick battle at lunch will be able to use any of the games mini-scenarios or if they have a little more time they can work through one of the two single player campaigns or go online with DS Wifi and battle it out against three other players.
Matt covers our Sony booth tour in a few pages but I didn’t get a chance to ask the Sony person about the Core edition of the PS3. The system will be able to play Blu-Ray movies even though it doesn’t have an HDMI output and console owners will not be able to purchase add on wireless devices or SD/CF/memory stick readers for the system in case they aren’t able to get their hands on the top end edition day one.
The final stop on today’s show was with Sega and we got to see two of their upcoming titles.
- CHROMEHounds is turning out to be one of the more impressive titles at the show. For weeks we’ve been posting very good looking screenshots of the game and after finally seeing the game in person and playing it a bit I’m happy to report that the game looks like it will live up to the hype. My only concern about the game is that gamers will be able to purchase weapons via Xbox Live Marketplace and use them in online games. While the developer promises that these won’t be super powerful weapons it does raise the specter of an unbalanced playing field when playing online. Luckily the game has a rich single player experience that should help compensate for it.
- I admit I was a bit shocked when Sega announced Full Auto 2 as an exclusive for the PS3. While the game didn’t exactly go gangbusters on the Xbox you usually assume that one exclusive will beget another exclusive release. This wasn’t the case this time as Sega actually admitted today that they started working on the sequel before the original game shipped. The new version will feature battle arenas where you can duke it out against other players in a confined space as well as a new customizable weapons system and the added non-player cars in the environment that you can use as weapons against your opponents (blowing up gasoline tankers in a game near your foes is a lot of fun)
