You like Subnautica. I like Subnautica. We all like Subnautica. But there is only so much Subnautica to go around.

But what if someone was making a Subnautica-style game based in the desert, with endless seas of sand instead of ocean waves? Would that appease the Subnautica nuts? Or at least tempt them into giving the new sand-based sci-fi game a look?

We will find out later this fall, as Starsand is promising to do just that. Developed by Italian developer Tunnel Vision, Starsand is launching into early access on November 4, 2021. You know the drill. Forage. Build tools. Forage further. Build a shelter. Get utterly wrecked when you wander too far and encounter a killer sandworm. We've all been there.

Some key game features, lifted from a recent press release:

  • A massive otherworldly desert landscape to explore. Navigate over 64 km² terrain.
  • Discover a world full of lost monuments, strange artefacts and creatures both modern and ancient.
