Super Life of Pixel, the expansion? remake? sequel? to the original Life of Pixel will release on August 22nd for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

The original Life of Pixel was released back in 2014, and is currently holding a Very Positive rating on Steam. Developed by Super Icon, Life of Pixel was a fun exploration of console history, following one character on an adventure played on 13 different “emulated” consoles. The new title ramps that console number up to 19 (they must be bumping up against the limit at this point).

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, publisher WhiteMoon Dreams’ Associate Producer Matt Spencer writes about the commitment of the team at Super Icon. “Super Icon painstakingly recreated 19 legendary systems spanning three decades of gaming. They paid careful attention to the art styles, technical limitations and the intangible “feel” of each system and their respective eras. Some of these classically inspired consoles you may immediately recognize, and others may be new to you – but they all played an important role in the building of this industry that I love. And besides that, they’re freaking fun!

“At its core, this game is a fun history lesson. With every system you conquer and unlock, you’re given the chance to learn more about the original consoles they’re inspired by, down to the hardware and software specs of the era. Consider it a living, playable museum of gaming history, in which you will die. A lot.”

It is very fitting that this game, which is a celebration of older consoles, is releasing on the PlayStation Vita - a system now being kept alive in the West with sheer force of will by a committed fanbase. No word yet on cross buy/cross save, but regardless, this looks like a very cool release. The celebration of gaming history begins August 22nd. You can pick up the original title on Steam here.
