More information about the HTC Vive Wireless adapter surfaces

More On: Vive Wireless

If you're like me and have been waiting on the HTC Vive Wireless Adapter to make its way to consumers, well the wait shouldn't be too much longer.

Yesterday, a leak for a pre-order was up on B&H Photo's website showing a 9/3/2018 release date and a price of $300. Which given the price of the TPCast, that's OK. With HTC's recent trend in making their VR products very expensive, I was almost expecting them to charge more. The product page has been taken down by B&H so I'm guessing we should be getting an announcement soon from HTC.

HTC did post a setup guide for the Wireless Adapter on their site. You're going to need a free x1 or x4 PCIe slot to hold the WiGig card. The card connects to a wireless link box that can be clipped on top of your monitor.

Attaching the Wireless Adapter to an original Vive with the old strap or Deluxe Audio Strap seems pretty straight forward. In what amounts to little surprise from me, you'll need to purchase an additional kit to attach it to the Vive Pro. Who knows how much that's going to add to the price.

So after getting the app, you should be up and running with wireless VR. Which, is pretty flipping fantastic if you've been using a wired solution a lot.

For me though, this might just be a little bit too late. As an avid Vive user, I've been lured away from the headset to the Windows Mixed Reality headset for the ease of setup and a lot better visuals. Combining the Vive controllers with my Samsung Odyssey gives me the best of both worlds with great optics and great controller tracking to the point where my Vive headset sits gathering dust. TPCast is looking to add a wireless solution to Windows Mixed Reality so I'm excited to see what they bring to the table.

If you're a Vive or Vive Pro owner though, this is a pretty compelling purchase provided it works as advertised. With a leaked release date of September 3rd, it shouldn't be long now before we can all be VRing untethered.
